For
over 35 years, Aldersgate United Methodist Church has stood
as a beacon for the community, guided by this purpose: to be
a loving family of believers who proclaim the good news of
Christ through worship, prayer, fellowship, education, and
missions. It is this purpose that propels Aldersgate into the
future.
Aldersgate’s
first worship service was held on September 20, 1964 on the
campus of Evansville College, now known as the University of
Evansville. This community of worshippers was determined to
begin a much-needed new ministry, and continued to meet regularly
for several months. On Easter Sunday, April 18, 1965, 105 charter
members formally established Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
The fledgling congregation then set its sights on the future,
when they would be able to move from their temporary chapel
on the college campus to a permanent sanctuary, to be built
on a “barren hill.” This vision was realized on
February 12, 1967, when the new church was consecrated. Since
that time, members of Aldersgate have kept their eye toward
the future, growing and expanding their facility as needed
to meet the needs of their congregation.
